Fast And Effective – But Still In Need Of Caution: The CO2 BB Pistol

Business Blog

Carrying a firearm has become a hot topic across the country, especially with the proliferation of open-carry laws. That creates a problem for people who don't want to be seen as an easy target (because of no visible weapon) but who also aren't keen on carrying a full-fledged pistol everywhere they go. And while you could just carry an unloaded gun, you always have to assume the gun is loaded when you touch it – so you end up just as nervous handling the gun as you would be if it were really loaded.

People who have decided they want to buy firearms but who prefer not to have that much power on them often look for guns of a smaller caliber. One other choice is to look for a handgun-style BB gun. These do not shoot real bullets but instead small pellets. However, before you run out to buy one, be aware of what you're getting. These guns, whether you use them for target practice or for carrying around, have their own quirks, and you need to understand how to handle those quirks.

The Type of Power

BB guns can be powered by compressed air or carbon dioxide (CO2). You must realize that the CO2-powered guns are rather powerful. You still use BBs, but the CO2 really puts some oomph behind the pellets when you fire the gun, and you can break skin with those things. Compressed air offers a gentler, although still powerful, force for the pellet. In target practice, the CO2 can be a lot more fun to use, but if you're planning to carry the gun around, be extra careful if you choose CO2 power.

Reloading Times

If you're buying these guns for target practice, the CO2-powered BB gun is going to be easier to handle because you can load magazines of pellets. You don't have to load one or two pellets at a time like you did with compressed-air rifles at camp. Less reloading time means more practice time.

They Can Still Hurt

It's just a fact that even BB pellets can hurt people. With the potential for breaking skin, however, the CO2 guns pose a problem in that they can be more likely to create more damage to people, animals, and property. This does not mean you should avoid them; just be more careful of where you aim, and at practice ranges, do not ever let a minor fire a CO2-powered gun without supervision.

They Do Look Like Regular Handguns

Regardless of the power type for the pellets, be aware that these guns look like regular handguns. There are no flags or other features to tell police that these are BB guns. Treat the gun as you would a regular pistol and follow all regular-gun laws, even if BB gun laws are more lenient.
